On a winter’s night, Portland Bill can be a magical yet extreme place to photograph. The tourists are gone, the wind is up and the lighthouse keeper is the only person in sight. Wrapped up in his warm cottage, the light he extends across the sky keeps ships safe away from the rocks below.
To get this shot, I’m sure I nearly lost my fingers at one point – it’s not wise to go out to shoot winter lighthouses without gloves on a metal camera body and tripod, regardless of how much warm clothing you have on! For me, the focus of this shot is not the actual lighthouse (or its beam) – it’s the warm glow from the lighthouse keeper’s cottage while he’s wrapped up safe inside.
