"Some of us have been socially distant for centuries"… Bonsai Rock, Lake Tahoe. 🇺🇸 🏔 🌲I’ll never get enough of these three dudes - the bush and the two trees. While not, actually, bonsai trees - the distance and setting gives them that feel as you look out over the pristine waters of Lake Tahoe. 😎Set right across the state line of California and Nevada, the pull for me had been snowboarding for many years. But spending a bit more time in the are, the array of stunning views and locations all around the mountain lakeshore is truly hard to beat.Catch these guys at sunset, on a relatively calm day, and then we’re talking special moments - right there!PS - I’m calling the one on the right “Stan” …ding tall ;-)#BonsaiRock #Tahoe #LakeTahoe #Snow #Mountains #Sunset #LongExposure #PaulReiffer #Landscape #Lakeshore #VisitCalifornia #California #Nevada #InclineVillage #VisitTheUSA #PhaseOne #MediumFormat #SocialDistancing #SociallyDistant #Trees #Isolated #Alone

“What’s the weather like?” - A question that can never really be answered when visiting Patagonia’s Torres del Paine National Park, at any time of year. 🇨🇱 🏔In the summer, you can get caught off-guard and punished by nature for daring to venture to the mountains in the wrong kit. In the winter, as the National Park shuts down, you can be treated to a day like this where everything feels so calm and peaceful. ☀️But make no mistake - those swirling clouds that surround the mountain can be menacing whatever time of year you’re visiting, while bringing their own weather system along for the ride too. It’s easy to see how people get caught out up here, especially “off-season”, with no stores or gas stations for over 100km in any direction, that old saying - “be prepared” counts. That said, when you’re stood looking out over the awesomeness of Cerro Paine Grande, with the Salto Grande waterfall before you, it kind of makes it all worth it.…and yes, that’s me working out if I needed my 28mm or 35mm lens later on that day. 😉🤦‍♂️#Patagonia #Chile #PatagoniaChile #LandscapePhotography #CerroPaineGrande #TorresDelPaine #TorresdelPaineNationalPark #SaltoGrande #PaulReiffer #MountainMist #MountainClouds #PhaseOne #MediumFormat #UpClose #ChileGram

Corfe Castle, Dorset - It’s not just about the misty mornings… 🏰 🌅 🇬🇧Sure, it’s one of those “golden shot" things that photographers visiting Corfe Castle often crave, but when you have the hill almost on your doorstep, I guess it allows you to appreciate the scene in any weather, not only when it pops out through the mist. With a wealth of tools available to us, it’s getting increasingly easier to predict (with relative accuracy) when the morning fog will sit. Lying in a bowl, with the moist air floating in from the surrounding sea a few miles away, winter and spring can create amazing shapes and shadows as the light hits a blanket of mist around the ruins. But sometimes, it’s nice to take the castle in all by itself. No “amazing conditions”, no “surreal morning light” or anything else to write home about.…just a good old fashioned sunrise over a tiny village that sits at the base of some pretty spectacular ruins with a thousand years of history! 😎 📷(Although, it’s easy to forget that you’re on open land when you arrive in the dark - that is, until Harold and his two friends make it clear they don’t want you to leave!) 🐄#CorfeCastle #CorfeCastleVillage #PhaseOnePhoto #XT #IQ4 #150MP #Landscape #Corfe #Dorset #DorsetLife #VisitDorset #DorsetPhotographer #DorsetPhotography #Sunrise #WinterMornings #FrameAveraging #LongExposure

Heritage - Durdle Door, Dorset. 🇬🇧I guess I settled on “Heritage” as a title for this print, as this place is as much about my own heritage as it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, part of the UK’s “Jurassic Coast”. 🧗🌊And with that comes one of my biggest worries for this area. Beyond the crazy summer of disgraceful behaviour by hundreds of thousands of visitors to this spot, for years there has always been friction between the local community and the “landowners” - despite public access being granted through the South West Coastal Path. (Those who live locally will know what I’m talking about 😉🤦‍♂️🙄 )It’s a shame when genuine natural beauty spots become political (and politicised), but such is life in 2020 I guess. For me, however, as a photographer - all that can be forgotten in an instant when the sun pops up over the hills, illuminating the early morning sky with fiery red tones while the sea retains its stunning blues below. It may take more than one attempt to get it, but when those jigsaw pieces fit, wow - what a picture they build! 😎🌅(And what details they offer when you zoom in, too 😉 )#DurdleDoor #Dorset #Coastline #JurassicCoast #Landscape #Seascape #PaulReiffer #SouthWestCoastPath #SouthWestCoastalPath #Sunrise #SkyFire #RedSky #NaturalArch #RockFormation #PhaseOne #PhaseOneXT #VisitDorset #MediumFormat #LongExposure #FrameAveraging #DurdleDoorBeach

An astro-conundrum for the clever folks of Instagram… 🤔This was literally just me playing the other night - seeing how the Canon R’s dealt with high ISO along with the relatively new 15-35/2.8L lens. ✨ 📷At the end of testing Milky Way shots, I switched to play around with low-ISO long exposures over Man-O-War beach. For clarity, this was never intended to be “a shot”, don’t worry(!) - but loading it up today, I spotted something odd.During a 15 minute exposure at ISO250. F/2.8, 15mm - these spots appeared in the sky. 🌌While I know exactly how to edit star shots, and while I enjoy shooting the night sky, let me be the first to say I am by no means an astronomer…. And hence the question here to those more hands-on with this stuff.Take a look at the squares, the crops, especially the last image (number 3):1) Is simple - it’s the effect of clouds blocking and uncovering stars thought the exposure as the earth turns and they move.
2) Is likely a plane/satelite/even a meteor (apparently that was going on this past week) - but again, not unusual.
But…
3) The line of dots. (In the last crop image) They appear to be relatively geostationary to the earth.
Checking previous frames, they’re there (appearing as stars), but they don’t seem to move in the same way as others. While they DO move, it’s a tiny, tiny, amount from frame to frame (so, not a sensor issue, from what I can see).So what did I capture? Geostationary satellite(s)? A line of non-moving planets? Weird lens flares?! 🛰Genuinely interested to know!#Astrophotography #NightSky #ManOWar #DurdleDoor #MilkyWay #WhatIsThat #CanonEOS #RFLenses #WideAngle #StarTrails #LongExposure #PaulReiffer #PopQuiz #NameThatStar #LightTrails

Ah, the Aurora - but is it the Northern, or Southern, Lights? 🤔In the game of popularity, you’d have to say the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) wins - a quick search for tags on Instagram will tell you that. ✨But if you ever get the chance - make sure to take the time and effort to see the Aurora Australis (Southern Lights) too. While similar, trust me, they’re not the same.Where greens and yellows typically flood the northern sky from vantage points such as Canada, Iceland, Greenland and Norway - it was the pinks, reds, and golden glows that greeted us that night in the Southern Hemisphere, as we camped out at the Waipapa Point Lighthouse on the southern coast of New Zealand.Of course, the classic shots of Iceland’s glacial lagoons and waterfalls with their dancing colours above will never get boring - but there’s something special, in my mind, about seeing both sets and their differences as the solar winds hit each of the earth’s poles. And yes, after a few hours stood out in the cold, being “inspected” by the local sea lion colonies, I found a rather unambiguous way to make my feelings known in terms of what I wanted for dinner that night. 🥧 😂#Aurora #AuroraBorealis #AuroraAustralis #NewZealand #PureNewZealand #WaipapaPoint #Lighthouse #NorthernLights #SouthernLights #PaulReiffer #NightSky #AstroPhotography #ShootTheStars #Gullfoss #Iceland #Differences #ExploreTheWorld #SouthernHemisphere #LightShow #LightPainting
