Hiking up ice-covered pathways, steep hills and across frozen rivers, I just had an offline satellite image from Google maps to go by, but wow did this final view make the winter trek worth it.
Far away from the ‘tourist loop’ on the south of the island, this is one of Iceland’s many less-visited waterfalls, especially in the off-season – perfect to spend an hour or two here with nobody else around, just watching the ice structures this torrent of water pounding the basalt rocks below could form.
The glacial water really is that blue – and on a stormy day with a long exposure, this turned out to be quite the balanced, and rather serene, scene out of a morning’s challenging hike.
