Sometimes the shot we treasure isn’t the shot we intended to get.
This happened to me on a trip out to the Mesquite Dunes in Death Valley, California. Of course I also captured a lot of dune shots that evening, but just before the sun set behind the mountains in the distance, a perfect setup occurred that I could never have foreseen. A man who had climbed to the top of the next dune along to look at the colours to the east caused by the sun setting behind him – and he took a coffee along with him. The sun itself just about picked up some of the curves of the dune below, but created this fantastic silhouette which I couldn’t have even planned.
The calmness of the moment, warmth of the sun, and uniqueness of the dunes all came together with that one solitary man at the perfect time to give me a shot I’ll always enjoy.
