I already had sunset over Emerald Bay, Lake Tahoe “in the bag” from a previous trip – and had no intention of replicating that same shot this time.
However, I really did want to get a sunrise! While the water level in Lake Tahoe was worryingly low during this trip (and visiting after a non-existent ski season was rather weird too!), we’d managed to escape the inbound rain the night before while shooting Bonsai Rock so I was up for a gamble.
And the gamble paid off. Not only did the rain hold off, but the perfect amount of cloud cover stayed put over the lake ready to be photographed. I did wait long enough for the sun flare itself to pop through the break in the clouds, but at that point a lot of the colour had gone. Lake Tahoe really does hold a special place in my heart, and every time I’m there to photograph it, I remember why all over again. It’s a stunning place, and the view from the Emerald Bay overlook and gateway to the lake itself is one I’ll never get bored of!
