The Unwritten Rules of Cityscape Shooting

Most cityscape photographers shoot the same three locations from the same three viewpoints with the same “standard settings” up high.

This masterclass is about how we capture everything else – having spent years getting to places that don’t appear on any location list.

From the top of the Shanghai Tower before the safety glass went in, to rooftop access that technically didn’t exist, to hotel relationships that opened doors no amount of Google or LinkedIn research ever could.

In this session, we’ll discuss how access actually works at the highest level: the two-tier world that’s hidden from many photographers, how to read a new city before you touch your camera, what to say (and what not to say) when you’re asking for something unusual, and why incredible access still means nothing if you blow the shot when you get there! Practical, honest, and built entirely on real stories (including a few that didn’t go quite as planned, along with the one where he fell off…)

We’ll take you behind the scenes on campaign shoots, show different perspectives, and talk through the recipes behind shooting some of the world’s most iconic cities.

System requirements:

All classes are provided and operated as a secure, password protected, YouTube Live Session or Zoom meeting in full HD video. (Format will be confirmed 1 week prior to broadcast.)

In order to participate, and by signing up for a masterclass session, you agree that you have the following available for use:

Watch and Participate:

• Screen resolution of at least 1920 x 1080
• Unrestricted access to Youtube

Recommended for fully-interactive sessions:

• Full or Trial Edition of Capture One v.16.5+
• Webcam or HD Webcam, built-in or via USB

For Zoom sessions, you will need to have the latest version of the Zoom meetings client downloaded (instructions will be in your confirmation email) and join the virtual meeting space 5 minutes prior to the agreed start time, using a minimum 8Mbps down / 4Mbps up, reliable Internet connection.
