Microsoft Bing – Can I get my image on the homepage?
Many of you will know the history to “bing” – Microsoft’s evolution to their original MSN search page. Granted, a lot less people would ever say they’re “binging” something than those who “google”, but hey – it’s used by a surprising amount of people.
Last month, Microsoft launched a competition in association (rather randomly) with Dizzee Rascal – called “Your Britain“. What’s unique about bing is that it displays a different image every day as a background to the search box. So, spurred on by the attraction of a £10,000 prize (along with, of course, the idea of getting my image on their homepage!) I entered 4 images.
Now – here’s the challenge: To get the images even into the “final”, one or more of them need to be in the top 20 by number of votes by 1st July. People can vote on 5 images per day, and you get a fresh batch of 5 votes every day between now and then. So I’m asking you all – if you’d be so kind (and fancy seeing one of these images on the search homepage for 24 hours!) to vote for one (or all!) of them as often as you can in the next four weeks!
Here they are, and they can each be clicked on to vote…
Pulpit Rock – Portland, taken at sunset.
Portland Bill Lighthouse, at midnight.

To vote, simply click on one (or all!) of the images above that you like, and look to the bottom right. You’ll see the “vote now” button just like this: :-)
Thanks, everyone! Don’t forget – you get 5 votes a day!

International Photography Awards – My Submission
It’s that time of year again – the “awards season”.
Ready with my entries for both the BIPP and RPS, I have decided this year that I won’t be submitting anything into the UK “Landscape Photographer of the Year” and instead divert that time, energy and money into a different (and in my view) more substantial competition: The International Photography Awards 2011. While the UK Landscape competition is strong, when I look at the panel for the IPA it seems that it has somewhat more “clout”: Saatchi & Saatchi, National Geographic, Merrell Publishers, Tate Britain, they’re all in there – ironically, alongside a member of the Royal Photographic Society too.
So, my submission this year to the IPA is a mix…
First off, it’s one of my favourite images ever taken – Pulpit Rock on Portland, Dorset. Although I love the images I have of the lighthouse up and running, I can’t help feel that this image is the stronger one for an entry into “Nature – Landscape” (granted, a lighthouse would have to go into a different category as it’s hardly “natural”, but you know what I mean
)
This was taken over a year ago, but never entered for a landscape award. Hopefully it’ll be unique enough to grab some form of recognition!
Next up, it’s “that head in the pool” :-) This is model Don Brookes, and was shot in Palm Springs, California. I’ve entered it into two categories – “Advertising – Self-Promotion” and “People – Portraits” as I genuinely couldn’t work out which category would allow it to have the most impact. This one, really, had to go in. Given the 120 degree heat, use of a mansion house in Palm Springs, amount of time it took for Don to lie there without breathing (safely) with no water movement and the fact I nearly lost my camera in the process (yes, it was shot from exactly the same level – no tricks!) I think it deserves something for effort alone! That said, I’m hoping the judges will go for the vibrance of the image as well as the fact it’s just that little bit different…
Finally, a new style for me. This, I’ve put in as my “throw-away” entry, into the “Editorial – Environmental” category. I didn’t realise this would come out as well as it did when I shot it – after all, it was taken while I was experimenting with Canon’s S95 compact camera in Thailand (I’d decided not to travel with my 20lbs of camera and lenses on my back all the time!).
I was amazed when I realised how well the camera had done, but also how dramatic the situation looked – a situation we were also heading out into in order to get to Maya Bay before the tourists! I just love this image – that guy waiting for the storm clouds to clear so he can go and make a living on the boat all day, and I know how he felt – it was 6:30am and miserable!
So, entries close on the 24th June – let’s see what the panel of judges think of mine over the next month or two ![]()

Hive Beach – On a winter’s afternoon
Two birds with one stone today: Number one, to get out and about shooting some landscapes in England for fun (I haven’t done that for a couple months now) and number two, to visit some places that are (embarrassingly) just down the road to which I’ve never been.
So, Hive Beach is today’s focal point. On the way, I passed a stunning view of both St Catherine’s Chapel in Abbotsbury as well as the Fleet and Portland in the background:
But that wasn’t why I was out with my camera… The plan was to get to Hive Beach for sunset. Hive Beach, it turns out, is also home to some *amazing* food at the Hive Beach Cafe and while the decor isn’t exactly that of a top-notch London restaurant, the food is reported to be right up there. After stopping for a quick drink and a slice of cake, it was off to the beach for an hour of freezing temperatures.
First off, on the way down to the water’s edge, this little boat was sat all on its own. With the sun dropping in the sky, and with the combination of an ND-8 filter and a colour gel, this was a nice enough capture for me to save
And then it was on to the wait for sunset. While waiting, I noticed the colour of the cliffs to the west changing, and the sea getting rougher. With a 1.5s exposure, this image captures everything apart from the freezing cold!
…and… then… the story stops! Yes, sadly, the sunlight gave up. To my right, on the beach, were two other photographers who were there for around an hour before me and showed no signs of leaving even after I’d fully packed up. Unfortunately for them, my prediction came true – the sun disappeared behind a bank of cloud which rather hastily grew, eventually obscuring the entire sunset and what would have been the beautiful reds and purples over the sky and sea.
So – one to go back to and “try harder next time”. Hey – it must be the restaurant’s way of telling me I need to come back for food…
