Where did the sunshine go…?
Wow, it’s been a looooooong time since I wrote on here – and for that, I can only apologise. Those following me on facebook and twitter will know that it’s been a crazy busy few months, but I know that’s no excuse for not checking in on here every now and then. So tonight, I was planning to grab a few pictures of the 99% full moon – but instead the somewhat permanent feature of rain lately has put pay to that so it’s time to catch up on here!
First off, a new image! Granted, I have months and months of images to catch up on, but this one from yesterday caught my eye : amidst all the rain that’s been going on all over England recently, I managed to snap a passing break in the clouds over a field I drive past all too often:
…and now to answer the immediate question I got on facebook about this image… No, the sun is not photoshopped in any way. Ironically, I’m kicking myself that there are a few “spots” on it where my filter wasn’t 100% clean. That starburst is what I get when shooting at either f/11 or f/14 on my 16-35mm 2.8L lens. And yes, I love that lens!
What IS cool though, is the fact that for many years I’ve always missed the opportunity to capture the bright yellow fields that I pass most mornings in the car – always being too late when I finally got around to bringing my camera! The same could be said for Nick Dempsey who came along and snapped his own versions of the same field. Now is the time to get out there and capture the colours in the fields across the country though; before the farmers get to them with their harvesting!
So what else? Well, I’ve been on a bit of a world tour to say the least, since my last post I’ve been to Chennai (in India), Montreal, Paris, Lille, and up and down the country non-stop. While every trip has been great, the dodgy stomach I got in India, coupled with constant jet lag, is something I could have done without in such a compressed period of time!
What all that travelling has done, however, is make me appreciate a bit of “down time” at home – something I’ve not had nearly enough of so far this year! I now have a pile of memory cards full of images from all of those places, however, which I’m looking forward to sifting through and picking some favourites
In the meantime, I did just find this little gem from Paris: Everyone seemed to be taking pictures of the glass pyramid entrance in front of the Louvre. As always, I’d rather not shoot what others are (and it was cold and wet outside!) so captured this one of the Louvre from inside the pyramid itself:
Yes, that’s had a touch of HDR applied but I just love the contrast between the traditional old building as seen from the very modern glass structure that’s been built in its forecourt.
Beyond all that travelling, it seems one of my images has started a debate online! The cover to the right is on the current issue of the Dublin Evening Herald‘s “Dubliner” Magazine – and was the outcome from an email conversation I had with their editor about the use of some of my previous images of Sam Kneen (the winner of “Mr Gay UK 2011″).
For my part, I just provide the images – but it seems to have kicked up quite the conversation online at “broadsheet” over what constitutes a gay image or not.
For me, I find it funny – people have missed the irony that years ago the “big issue” was whether this type of subject could even be broadcast in mainstream media; now people are arguing over what is broadcast and whether it accurately defines them.
I, for one, would say that’s progress…!
With all that going on, I also have the latest set of images for Lick’s campaign and we’re shooting again next weekend – all good stuff, but once again, keeping me far too busy for my own good!
Next up, it’s vacation time soon – and on this one, I’m going to some places I’ve visited before (but with my decent cameras this time) such as Bodie and Mono Lake – but also to an area of Death Valley which has evaded me for some time: “The Racetrack Playa“. Click on the link to find out more…!
In other news – I’ve started noticing a few similarities (to say the least) between the images and locations I’ve shot, and every single one of another photographer’s landscape images. One to keep an eye on, but while nobody can (or should) “protect” a view, it does slap you in the face a little when you see every shot you’ve taken in some way imitated!
On a massive positive, however, I’m ditching my second Canon body for the new 5D Mark III that I’ve just ordered. Having evaluated the 1Dx, as far as 35mm DSLR’s go, while the 1Dx may be better for sports and portraits, the new 5D/3 sensor seems to win hands down for landscape work. So, my crop body will be going to camera heaven, leaving me with the Canon combo of a 5D mk II and a 5D mk III. Should be good!
Take care, and I promise to write more soon

The Lick Look Book – Attitude’s Fashion Edition 2011
Aside from all of the standard full-page adverts that Lick have been running each month in Attitude Magazine, for November, a special fashion edition is being launched.
Not only will this feature in the next edition of the magazine, but a special iPad edition of the contributing ranges is being released – so here’s a selection of the range that Lick have got embedded into the 2011 “Look Book”, featuring a lot of their new range…

While the full feature will include all styles from briefs, boxers, trunks to jock-straps, this is just a sample of not only the styles but also the models which are actively being used for their 2011 campaigns. There’s quite a range there from Nathan (who you’ll have seen in previous ads), Julian (who has a more “fashiony” look than many of the models used before) and Chris (who’s previously modelled for Calvin Klein and Aussiebum).
Well, at the very least it functions as a quick fashion montage of a few of Lick’s models and styles… :-)

The latest Attitude Magazine ad for Lick Underwear – Feedback wanted!
The latest in the 2011-12 series of underwear adverts for Lick is just about coming out of Photoshop, but this month, there’s a little bit more time to make some adjustments.
So, we’re back to the shoot we did with Nathan a few months ago – this time for the “fashion/style” edition of Attitude that’s coming up. Keeping it simple (and not quite so obvious as the previous jockstrap campaign) the current proposal is to run with the advert below, sticking to one of Lick’s core products: white trunks.
Now here’s the challenge. Lick don’t HAVE to go with this shot – in fairness, there are around 300 in the archive from that one shoot alone!
I think it works, Ben (the MD of Lick) thinks it works too.
The thing is – do YOU?
We did shoot two other models during the same session back then and this guy – Chris – hasn’t been used in a dedicated advertising shot so far. Naturally, it doesn’t have the copy over it and is a very different feel, but what do you guys think? Who wins the October edition – Nathan or Chris?
Don’t worry – it’s nothing personal (and neither guy will get upset!) it’s just down to which image works in an advertisement better than the other. And hey, as there is a bit of time before it’s got to be submitted, I figured it would be worth getting your thoughts first!
Let us know your thoughts!
Lick – The latest male underwear shoot. Model – Nathan
It’s that time again, when Lick underwear‘s new range has arrived and so it’s out with the old and in with the new – starting with a new launch advert in the September edition of Attitude for their new lines:
Last year’s successful campaign in Attitude mag made a lot of use of one model in particular – so it was time for the guys at Lick to find some new models to shoot the new range…
With three models in the studio and the clothing good to go, it was a day full of shooting to get images for catalogues, web as well as the print adverts and press materials. First up, fresh model Nathan, and the first image we shot of the new jockstraps – a classic underwear pose:
With the “stock look” out of the way, it’s then time to give a few different styles, compositions, poses and treatments a go. Keeping things in the studio, the Lick guys just wanted to get some different shapes going on to show off the new range. The problem is, studio shots can look a bit “samey” – so after shooting on the bed, off to the stairwell we went, to try and catch some slightly different looks for use in advertising:
There’s a wall outside the studio which I’m starting to love (too much, arguably, as I have to be careful not to use it) – but for this, it was perfect. How else can you make someone wearing a pink jockstrap look “industrial”…? ;-)
The second one, above right, is actually the non-cropped version of the final September advertisement for Attitude – and it’s different enough to catch the eye (in my opinion, of course
)
So, that was the new item shot for Nathan. The other models had their selections of the new range (and I’m still to process those!) but the guys at Lick wanted to try shooting a few “different” shots of last year’s range as well, for their clearance.
Here goes….!
Personally – I LOVE the retro black and white shot on the bed. This is one of my favourite images from the day – simply because it’s SO different from any style I’ve used before. While it’s a departure from the standard underwear shots used by most companies, I think it has some mileage.
What do you think? (of the photography, and the model, of course
)

Latest Attitude Advert for Lick Underwear – February
Here it is – the third and final of the current series of Steve Box adverts for Lick Underwear – appearing in Attitude magazine next month.
Previous ads had been studio shots with calculated lighting. This one, however, used nothing more than a skylight from above and some pretty “down to earth” surroundings provided by a very helpful local bar… It’s certainly a lot grittier than the images used in the two before – let’s see how it goes down with the readers of Attitude
Oh, and as a special treat – Lick are now offering 40% off their entire range for every customer using the code “ATTITUDE” at checkout. For the rest of the world, that will be made public next month; for you guys (and girls), you can use it right now
Want to check their range? Simply click here to browse the online store!

Attitude Magazine Ad Preview – January for Lick Underwear
Yup, that’s right – it’s the second in the “Lick Underwear” series, featuring Steve Box as the underwear model. Following the success of December’s campaign, Lick are there again in the next issue with a very different style of photograph from the last. This time, shot with an intentional blow-out using a backlight behind the frame Steve is stood within, the focus is purely on the “Union Hipster” that he’s wearing.
So, that’s January sorted – and don’t forget, you can use the code in the advert above right now
On to the spring series, and… well… let’s just say look out for Lick’s “search for a model” which MAY just include an all-expenses paid shoot somewhere very warm…!
