Following my rule of “50% of the world is always behind you”, this absolutely freezing morning was made better when I turned away from the sunrise I was desperate to capture and instead looked at what the sun was doing to the wall.
‘The Wall’, well I guess it is THE wall – The Great Wall of China. Due to our guide becoming sick, we’d had to climb on our own across a not-so-official route to get up to the wall before a) sunrise and b) other tourists. The cable car wasn’t an option in the middle of the night, so a hike it was. Focusing so much on getting the sunrise shot through the mist, I did almost forget my own rule until the sky started clouding in. Looking back, there was an awesome sight – the wall, covered in frost, the texture of the stone against the winter trees and striking pure blue sky as the sun lifted above Beijing.
And yes, we got some funny looks from the ‘first’ tourists of the day that we passed on our way down.
