Oh, the irony! The number of times I’ve walked the trail up to “mirror lake” and never quite managed to get the picture I was hoping for, only to find this little gem only metres away from the Yosemite Village parking lot instead.
In summer, this popular area near the campgrounds is packed with kayaks, tube-ring riders and families with picnics. In the cold winter air, however, it remained empty for the whole time we were stood on the bank.
With no more company than a few ducks, we stood and waited for sunset; the river, while flowing, remaining perfectly flat on the surface. Preparing for the worst, I captured a few frames early-on just in case we were invaded with people, but as we waited the scene became more and more magical by the minute. A thin layer of ground-fog spread over the icy-cold embankment across the river, and the top of Half Dome began to glow in the light from the setting sun. A single 2 minute exposure was all this scene really needed – which was lucky, as moments after this frame was captured, the light changed again, preparing this awesome view for another day ahead.
