A short (in road trip terms!) drive from Queenstown, New Zealand, you’ll find the quiet little town of Lake Te Anau.
Located on the border of Fiordland National Park and Te Wahipounamu World Heritage Area, its crystal clear waters, seaplane jetty and piers across the lake are often passed by as tourists zoom through to get to the more famous Mildord Sound.
For me, I’d stayed in Te Anau a few months before, and resolved to return and capture the lake with my “proper camera” and convey how dramatic the scenery in this part of the world can be. When we arrived this time, my initial thoughts were “oh no” – the snow wasn’t quite hitting down the mountains yet, the sky was thick with solid cloud and the wind was up. As always, waiting for half an hour or so gave me a small window to capture what I wanted.
As the weather transitioned into a more dramatic sky, I clicked away (this time, manually holding a 4th filter over the front of the lens – try doing that for 10 seconds perfectly still!) and captured this dramatic sky against the calm water.
