Guilin, China – a magnet for photographers from around the world with its incredible land formation of mountains bursting through the land around the town’s life-source : the river.
Getting up in the middle of the night to rain, fog and dirt tracks in order to get there before sunrise wasn’t the most pleasant of experiences. Nor was finding that (despite the trek up the mountain in pitch-black) I was simply one of hundreds who make the journey in the hope of the sun breaking through at dawn. Luckily, my “western tenacity” paid off and while others left, I remained.
The sunrise itself pretty much didn’t happen. Hidden behind the clouds that surround this place almost every day of the year, photographers around me left disheartened and let down. Many had tried for days on end, for many this was their third or fourth trip to the same place over the years. Half an hour later, however, something rather dramatic occurred – the clouds slowly thinned out and the sun finally got a chance to shine through.
If I could pick two colours that represent the Chinese countryside best, it would be these two – thedeep blue sky above, offset by “natural” browns below. 😉 Regardless of the colour in the frame, I’m so glad I stuck at it – many who were in Guilin all week had barely even seen daylight. For me, the sun had arrived just in time to give us a show, a portal to the sky above…
