over the rainbow

What were you doing at 8pm on New Year’s Eve? Getting ready for a party, I’m going to guess…
I was stood on the roof of a building with a friend of mine, waiting for Shanghai to turn on the “holiday lights” over the famous circular on/off-ramp of the Nanpu Bridge which links PuXi to PuDong.
Granted, I did in fact make it to a more civilised rooftop party a few hours later, and watched an amazing firework show from The Bund at midnight, but this was an image that had escaped us for 4 trips to the same location so far and I knew I had to take this one final chance to capture the the lights would make an appearance that night.
Having photographed the bridge before, I knew the exact angle – but it’s the lights which really make the difference in this shot. On certain days of the year, not only do the traffic trails create amazing shapes with headlights across the 3-layer ramp but the moving show of different coloured LED lamps make the entire scene come to life. A photograph can never quite catch the real motion that sits in front of you when you see it live with your own eyes, but as so many cars passed “over the rainbow” that night – my only hope is that I captured enough of it to create a truly lasting image.
