The bitterness of the cold winter fog that morning will always be in my mind whenever I look at this photograph.
On Lake Wakatipu, New Zealand, stands the quiet mountain town of Glenorchy – a small settlement just north of Queenstown where fields and mountains roll into one as the morning fog lifts after sunrise. Having stood disappointed at this very same spot the evening before, for a sunrise with no atmosphere, I didn’t hold out much hope until a friendly local photographer offered up a piece of advice: “There’s always loads of fog over the lake, you can’t see a thing” he said. Perfect I thought!
So that morning, before dawn, I ventured across the icy Queenstown road along the lakeside to Glenorchy – approaching the town, it seems he was right – it was full of fog. Luckily, the sunrise brought with it a breeze which forced the fog to flow from right to left of this scene, creating an eerie abstract background over the 60 second exposure. I guess I managed to get “just the right amount of fog”!
