I had that sinking feeling photographers get at some point in time – the one where you know you’re 15 miles away from a great shot, and the sun has already started to hit the horizon.
We’d been shooting the Monument Valley approach at the 13 mile marker, hoping for a sunset over the giant rock formations in the distance. Despite capturing exactly what I was hoping for, there was something happening in the sky that made me realise I was stood in exactly the wrong place for “that shot” of the iconic mittens.
Racing back to the main park overlook, it was clear to see that the rush had been worth it. Not only was the sky turning pink in the distance, but the moon had also started to rise over the valley floor. With not much time remaining to capture the colour in the sky before darkness fell, this was a one-shot opportunity to get the filters and settings right before clicking away. It seems luck was on my side that evening – with both shots in the bag, and a stunning view of the moon rising over these incredible natural formations.
