It’s the Manhattan view I can never get enough of – looking downtown from a rooftop overlooking the Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty and financial district in the background.
Despite this amazing vantage point, there is an element of luck involved in getting “the right clouds” for a dramatic and colourful sunset – which thankfully was on my side when I captured this, a revisit from my previous shot a few years prior.
In the intervening years, the Freedom Tower / One World Trade Center had made it through completion, towering over the financial district below, but due to the perspective of this shot still holding second-place to that one key icon of New York City : The Empire State Building.
With the sun setting off to the right of the shot, there was just enough break in the clouds to bounce back the deep reds, purples and magentas all across the city. What had started as a bad weather day had turned out to be a treat as the skies lit up, delivering an amazing coloured backdrop to the concrete maze that makes up Manhattan’s 59 square kilometres.
